Demystifying documentary family photography:
common questions and comments explained

My house is a mess - let me know when you are on your way and I will be sure to tidy up

Please do not worry about the state of the house. Or yourself. Really and truly. I mean it. The little things that you may think are clutter, help tell your story and one day when those things are gone, you will be glad to have a photo of them to take you right back to the “good ‘ol days”.

My family really doesn’t like getting their photo made…

Well good news! Not to worry as I won’t be asking anyone to do anything but be yourselves. I do not pose or direct during my time with you all. Instead I do my best to make sure everyone feels comfortable just being themselves and aim to make my camera invisible, not myself. I tend to ask questions and get to know each family: it is one of the things I love about what I do.

What should I do with the final images?

Print, print, print! Print them large for the wall, print them small for your desk or shelves, make a photo book or calendar; the possibilities are endless. I can tell you from personal experience that having prints around your home will make your children and family feel so loved.

What should we wear?

Whatever you feel comfortable in. Please be yourself. You will be happier with the end result if you embrace your true self instead of trying to get all dolled up for the camera.

We are pretty boring…there won’t be anything interesting to photograph…

This is never true. It may feel like things at your home is boring but I always find little ways to show you the extra in what you might call your ordinary. Connections with your loved ones are never boring and deserve to be documented.

Will you be taking photos the entire time?

My goal is to document you and your family. That doesn’t mean it is a stop-motion film of your life. I will take breaks and there are times that I am thinking about my next composition as well as times when I like to just stop and connect with my families. These are all times where the shutter will not be firing. :)
